“Let your light shine.” Luceat lux vestra is the open motto of my mom’s high school. I was very young the first time my mom and I went through her jewelry box, and she showed me her high-school ring. Only after I started this blog did I realize luceat lux vestra has been the golden thread woven throughout my whole life, my entire existence beginning with my parents naming me Eileen.
I was in elementary school when I learned that “Eileen” is the Irish form of Helen and means “light”. I disliked my name for a long time, but mostly because people would mistake it for Elaine or Ellen, pronounce it differently, or spell it incorrectly. It took me 40 years to grow into my name and embrace it.
